I once heard some Root Cause Medicine guy talk about that fact that he doesn't eat solid food anymore during the day. I loved the idea so much that this Good Gut Pudding was born ... hatched ... sprung from the blades of my Vitamix ... uh ... you get the idea ...
Why do I love this idea sooo much? Well ... a couple of things. Number one ... haven't you ever noticed that if you eat carb-heavy breakfasts ... like cereal, bagels (my fave), or ... horrors ... sweet rolls, pop tarts, or even doughnuts (EEK! ... one little Winchell's MAKES MILLIONS every year) that it helps energy for awhile and then you crash ... especially when they're not coupled with protein (milk doesn't count!).
Not to mention ... number two ... the nutrient-anemic calories you're eating that go right to your ____ (fill in the blank with the body part you HATE the most)! Oh ... and number three ... protein-heavy breakfasts (like bacon and eggs) slow you down even more ... they're the hardest foods to digest.
So ... back to pudding. To tell you the truth ... SMOOTHIES GET OLD! I don't like to eat the same thing every day.
And I don't like frigid smoothies (I like to freeze my bananas and other fruit) when the daily temperature dips under 60 degrees. So THIS GOOD GUT PUDDING was a terrific alternative.
Because it has these nutrients ...
First ... avocado ...
With a substantial amounts of vitamins and minerals and monounsaturated fats in such a balanced level that it promotes heart health. Not to mention that it's touted as a weight- and fat-loss tool.
Second ... alternative milks
Quite frankly, I don't think dairy is good for ANY BODY (if you don't get the joke ... I forgive you!). I'm so against it that I wrote an article ... Wanna Go Dairy-Free? ... about it.
Third ... coconut milk and oil
I gotta debunk the myth about coconut and saturated fat. Oy ... where do I begin ... first read the works of Mary Enig and Sally Fallon about coconut oil.
These two ladies pioneered research on the dangers of trans fats in processed oils and were instrumental in getting trans fats on the nutrition label. There's also CONCLUSIVE PROOF that following a low fat PROCESSED FAT (most of what we eat) actually CAUSES heart disease.
So ... coconut oil ... it has tons of researched benefits including boosting metabolism, thyroid health, and weight loss. Not to mention relief from candida, infections, and Alzheimer's.
The thing I love about it, though, is that it sustains energy and keeps you fuller longer ... which means that a little bit of this pudding leaves you sated and happy for perhaps 6 to 8 hours.
Fourth ... cacao powder
First it's raw (cocoa is processed at high heat and thus loses a lot of its nutrients). Second, it can reduce the risk of Irritable Bowel Syndrome and other digestive problems (my hero!)
Third, it's chock-full of flavonoids, which have been shown to reduce blood pressure, heart disease, inflammation, and diabetes. And last ... it's also loaded with Iron, Magnesium, Potassium, protein, and fiber ... most of which is lost when you process cocoa.
Fifth ... bone broth protein
Bone broth has long been touted as a gut-healing panacea. Its health-boosting collagen, amino acids, minerals, and micronutrients are hailed to not only heal your gut but but boost immunity, reduce inflammation, and help you lose weight among its many benefits.
But ... truth be told ... I'm not a soup aficionado. Maybe occasional split pea and my childhood matzo ball. But I'm the one who NEVER opts for soup in my cafeteria except possibly on rainy cold days. So ... sipping it throughout the day as recommended ... NAH!
So I use bone broth protein instead. Because bone broth protein is simply concentrated bone broth, all of its protein comes straight from the broth and not other sources like whey, soy or egg. A better form for me ... and for this pudding. And mine is CHAW-CLATE ... which works for this concoction too!
Sixth ... collagen powder (optional)
This is an optional ingredient as the bone broth powder already contains some but ... at 77 ... I need all the skin help I can get! There's a growing body of evidence suggesting collagen can improve skin, ease arthritis symptoms, and promote wound healing.
But many types don't work. So I opt for the ones that have all FIVE types of collagen. And ... of course ... are non-GMO, pure collagen without fillers, and hydrolyzed ... which means they're broken down so they're easily absorbed.
Seventh ... L-Glutamine powder (optional but necessary)
I've been using L-Glutamine to heal guts for what seems like forever! I brought it into my cancer clinic to protect guts from the ravages of chemo and radiation and it was so-much used that it was included in the clinic's research studies.
L-Glutamine is the most plentiful amino acid (broken-down protein) in our bodies. But we need more when we're stressed. And leaky gut as well as our crazy modern lifestyles cause a lot of stress.
L-Glutamine may help support the gut microbiome and modulate inflammation, according to a 2021 review in Food Science and Human Wellness. According to the review, “It appears to help strengthen the gut wall, potentially helping with leaky gut and improving the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome,” And I can tell you from our vast use in our clinic that it also supports immune health.
I wouldn't do this good gut pudding ... or a smoothie for that matter ... without a Tablespoon of L-Glutamine. I'm that sold on it!
