Revealing Responses to the Phrase … Food is …
OK … I told you that this would be an ever-evolving project. And a mind-blowing thing happened just the other day. I posted a picture of Swiss cheese with the words, “FOOD IS …” superimposed over it on several of my Facebook groups and got back hundreds of responses. So I decided to change the focus of this eBook so that I could share with you all the thoughts and feelings that people ACTUALLY have about food. And I’m going to introduce them to you pretty much in their order of popularity. There are also some intriguing thoughts from some nutrition professional friends of mine. As well as a few of my own. I’m going to comment on each response too. Eat it all up …
Food is … Fuel
This was the most popular answer of all. Which is kind of ironic as it depersonalizes food on many levels. There ARE people who eat to live … not live to eat. But not too many that I’ve found.
Food IS fuel. But it’s also toddy for the body, elixir for the brain, calm for the gut, community, happiness, grief, yadda, yadda … In other words, food has a cosmos and cornucopia of meanings. So it’s also ironic that the next most popular response was …
Food is … Love.
So many people answered with this that it buoyed me up … especially after its close juxtaposition to food as fuel. Food is love in so many ways … personally, cooking for people and watching them enjoy whatever I cook is double-hearts-and-kisses to me. Food can also be self-love … eating what you think is healthy and beneficial for you. It not only makes your body feel good but your mind and soul too.
To me, it’s so important that we feed ourselves with love that doesn’t only come from food sources. Having friends and family around, doing spiritual practices, moving your body in a good way are only a few of the ways we can. After all, Shakespeare said, “If music be the food of love, play on …”
Food is … Medicine
I guess many believe that VERY old Hippocrates saying, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food” as this was the third most popular response. So it’s amazing to me that, after years of working with doctors, that most of THEM don’t get it. Also, even after more years of working in the addiction community, where there’s been a lot of research that food and supplements positively impact upon recovery (and I’ve witnessed it firsthand and have tons of tangible proof from private clients), I can’t believe that they’re still feeding them cake and ice cream at those places. And that most rehabs, even the upscale ones, have no nutrition programs similar to mine to buoy up recovery and prevent relapse.
I’m wondering when everyone will get that eating healthy is the ticket to wellness. It’s not complicated … more fruits and veggies, whole grains, good fats and beans. Less meat. And organic if you please. It’s that simple.
Are we so addicted to fast food and even faster food solutions that we’ll sacrifice our health for them? And it’s weird that many responded this was as most don’t practice what they erstwhile preach. Oh … so sorry … I’m now finished ranting.
Food is … Life
This appears to be the next most popular response. And no wonder! Without food and fluid we’d have no life. Food is also such a deep, primal patchwork canvas of community, culinary, comraderie, consecration, and comestible and so woven into our very psyches that it’s impossible to unravel it. And who would want to.
Food is … Delicious AKA Yummy!
These both ran neck-and-neck and, since they’re very close in meaning … albeit one more whimsical than the other … I decided to combine them. It’s such an unabashed endorsement of food sans any hangups or hysterics that I say … “Yeah … go for it … eat big bites and chew blatantly and boorishly … lick … slurp … and most of all … ENJOY!
Some of the responses were also inventive, such as LB, who said that:
Food is … Tastebudelicious
And BF, who replied:
Food is … Wonder-full
But one of my favorites was:
Food is … CHEESE!
Since I put those two words on a picture of cheese, many people said that it was just that. Which just goes to show you how suggestable we are! I, however, loved the reply of one, SF, who said “Being a vegan, the photo turned me off… I closed my eyes and visualized a colourful salad and then Food is … Energizing” ☺
