STOP Weighting START Living
OK … I’ve written a lot about the program that I’m starting soon. But now it’s time to tell you what this is really all about. This article has a two-fold purpose … I’m also defining this for myself. Because it’s a combination of what I do with clients every day along with some new stuff I’m just learning at my tender septuagenarian age.
The purpose … a brand new way to look at weight loss … not from restricting and avoiding and focusing on food but finding out HOW you use food the way you do. And WHY you’re WEIGHTING … beating up yourself and your body for your food behaviors. And finally LIVING with kindness and care. Instead of losing weight at first you lose weight at last … and keep it off forever. It’s a brand-new way to STOP Weighting and START Living.
So what does that all mean?
It’s about Process … We only change when a) something is important to us, b) ways to affect that change are broken down to doable, sequential tasks and c) we’re confident that we can do each one. We’re also confident that an accumulation of skills and information that we’ve learned along the way will carry us through to a positive outcome.
And be OK with, if we can’t do it at that moment, that it’s all about process. And that perhaps a new plan for tackling another small task and reviewing how confident we are that we can do that one will add to our accumulation of skills. And tip the scales over to permanent change.
It’s been my experience that, with this accumulation of skills and confidence, people can eventually lose 80 pounds like one of my clients who had been in Weight Watcher’s since the age of twelve. And another who weighed over 450 with a similar history of failures and futility lose over 100. The cool thing about both of these people was that, once they lost the weight, it was gone forever. Because they did it the right way.
It’s NOT about Weight or Food … We’ve been brainwashed to think that if we were just a certain weight or ate a certain way that we would have everything that we wanted. IT JUST AIN’T SO!
In reality, health, happiness, and well-being happens when we’re connected to a deeper meaning for our lives. Trying to fix the outside before you fix the inside is so counterproductive that it can lead to profound disappointment. Disappointment from which it may be impossible to recover.
It’s about Daily Practice … I don’t know any change that can take place, even if you have enough information and confidence, without doing it every day. And failing sometimes. Process is about trying, failing, and doing it again. And allowing that. It’s also so important to be curious about change and experiment with ways to do it. That’s why committing to do something every day to move change forward is vital. Even if you just pack your lunch. Or walk five minutes out and five minutes back … and build it.
Because I’m convinced after years of working with people that this daily practice facilitates change even when you can’t see or feel it. I’m convinced as experts say that we’re aware of only 5% of what we do and the choices we make … the rest is a deep, unconscious abyss. That’s why… when we try to make changes to our weight … we’re only successful 5% of the time. It’s ironic that the same percentage applies to both. The bottom line is that the big part of you that wants to maintain status quo wins out. You know that if you’ve ever dieted.
So the journey is about doing it every day to influence the part of us that we can’t see or feel. That’s why the daily practice is not only about things to think or write about but also includes tools like guided imagery and mindfulness that speak directly to the unconscious.
What “Are You Weighting” will look like … Arriving at a format for this revolutionary program wasn’t hard. Because it needed to have a) daily practice, b) a way to gauge if the particular skill presented is important for you to learn, and c) a way to measure confidence that you can do it. That’s why this cried out for daily emails with sequential information and skill sheets. So the final program will have all of that as well as daily videos on a membership site for those who do better with listening than reading.
My goal for “Are You Weighting?” … to share with you the same tools I’ve been giving successful weight-losers and others with disordered eating in pricy private sessions for over twenty years. The tools to “STOP Weighting and START Living” … the life you’ve always wanted. The tools to respect your body and stop beating it into submission for an impossible goal. The tools to just feel good about yourself and your life choices. Let’s face it … if that’s all I give you … that’s HUGE!
But first I’d like to see what works and what doesn’t. That’s why I’d like to beta-test this on Facebook. Every day, I’m going to do a Facebook Live on my brand-new “Are You Weighting?” Closed Group (it’s not up now … we’re working on the artwork for the cover picture at this moment) along with writing a summary of what I’m covering on the video plus an upload of a skill sheet for you to do your daily practice. The videos will be chock full of great tools like mindfulness and guided imagery exercises geared toward making change easier and faster.
So I’m asking for your participation. I need FIFTY GOOD PEOPLE to go through this 30-day challenge with me. I’ll stop accepting people after I have fifty. And there will be some things you’ll have to do for me. They include: a) committing to review the materials for each day, even if you don’t do the skill sheets; b) participating fully in the process by openly sharing your stories and challenges; and c) filling out evaluations at 10, 20, and 30 days so that I know I’m on the right track to help you “STOP Weighting and START Living”.
So here’s what I’d like to do. If you’re interested in doing this with me, please email me at clientcare@healyourhealthnow.com. I’ll put you on my list and tell you when the group is up and we can begin. Probably sometime in April. And the best part … IT’S FREE! How about it?
